Getting married in the Netherlands

Wedding customs don't vary all that much these days - that is unless you're planning to get married in an exotic country. It takes years of planning (with the exception of Las Vegas), finding the perfect location, designing the invitation, talking things over with the registrar and perhaps also the clergyman. Traditionally brides are virginally clad in white and especially at Dutch, Spanish and American wedding ceremonies, there is always much too much Surinam rice thrown to the wind.

In spite of all these similarities, the "Hollandse bruiloft" has enough peculiarities to justify a place on www.howtosurviveholland.nl. If your Dutch lover pops the question, don't throw caution to the wind - give yourself a few days before you pledge your undying love. Beware:

    * Sorry ladies but diamonds are not a boy's best friend. Regardless of how much your Dutch guy loves you, do not expect him to surprise you with a diamond engagement ring.

    * The so-called "stukjes" are infamous at Dutch weddings. During your party your guests will leave no stone unturned: all of your sex, drugs, and rock&roll sins will be aired like so much dirty laundry. It's payback time for vindictive ex-lovers and neglected family members. For the bridal pair it's the ultimate love-test.

    * Another typical wedding custom: you're not invited for the whole day. Nope, depending upon your age, how near or how far your apple falls from the family tree and your party manners, you'll either be invited to the ceremony, the reception or the party. This frugal selection process makes painfully clear your place in the hierarchy of the friendship pyramid.

    * Setting up the wedding list is also of the utmost importance for the economical Hollander - what do we get out of it? No expense should be spared for the most beautiful day of your life but only if you can also reap what you have sown.

    * If you practice the A-Z of wedding vocabulary listed below, then this very special day will be a guaranteed success.
