As an EU/EEA or Swiss national (except Bulgarians and Romanians), you cannot apply for a residence permit. It is, however, possible to register with the IND (the Dutch immigration authorities) free of charge. Although you are not obliged to register, you are advised to do so as this may be quite handy in a number of situations. Where and when do I register? The registration takes place at your regional IND desk by appointment only. Please call IND at 0900-1234561 to schedule a time and place. Before registering with IND, you must have completed the registration with your local municipality.
What do I need to bring? After you have made the appointment, you will be sent an application form by post. You must complete this form and bring it along to the appointment. The registration for EU/EEA citizens is free of charge. You must also bring the following documents: 1. Documents to support your purpose of stay, such as: - Students: proof of enrolment issued by your host institution.
- Employees: employer’s declaration.
2. Proof of sufficient financial means - Students: statement (written by yourself) that you have sufficient financial means.
- Employees: mention of salary in the employer’s declaration.
3. Proof of health insurance 4. Passport or European identity card
Proof of registration As proof of your registration with IND a sticker will be placed in your passport. This sticker remains valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Netherland. There is no need to extend or renew this sticker.
Am I obliged to register? No, but it might be handy at some point during your stay. You may be asked to demonstrate proof of registration, for example when taking out basic health care insurance or a mortgage, or a phone subscription.
More information A brochure titled IND registration for EU citizens is available on the website of IND.
