International students are allowed to study in Holland for a certain set number of years, which is generally equal to the number of years of the study programme chosen plus an additional two years. This means that the total duration of study will depend on the type of study you choose. For example, a Bachelor’s programme in economics with a study duration of three years, followed by a Master’s programme in economics with a study duration of one year would allow you to stay in Holland for a maximum of six years. The IND would not extend your residence permit beyond these six years, even if you have not finished your studies. There is no option of returning to your home country for a certain period and then coming back to the Netherlands. Once you have used up the total number of years for study purposes you cannot get another residence permit for the same purpose. In general, you may enrol in a Master’s degree programme after completing a Bachelor’s degree. If you have obtained a Master’s degree and would like to go on to do a PhD, you will need to apply for a change in the purpose of your residence permit, as PhD positions are classified as work in the Netherlands rather than as study. * www.ind.nl
